[12:48:49] <Carl Hardwick> Hello. I just posted a comment on the Metronome IM News section. I'm running the Miranda IM client and since Wednesday morning, the Jabber server has been offline. The server status on Lightwitch.org shows that it can't connect to the server.
[12:54:43] *Maranda points status news on aria-net.org
[12:56:12] <Maranda> Carl Hardwick: and if you managed to type something here it means lightwitch.org is back online.
[13:02:04] <Carl Hardwick> Maranda[x] https://lightwitch.org/xmpp/status A few minutes ago, the server status was showing as "Can't connect". But now, it shows that the Jabber server is online. However, Miranda still can't connect.
[13:03:46] <Carl Hardwick> There hasn't been an update to Miranda for several weeks. Do I have to create a new login and password to connect to the Jabber server? Or do I have to change an option on Miranda, like enabling TLS?
[13:16:34] <Maranda> What're Miranda's connection settings Carl? Are you using manual settings or..?
[13:17:46] <Maranda> If Miranda is using SRV resolution correctly just inserting your JID and password should suffice
[13:24:43] <Carl Hardwick> I've been using Miranda with the Lightwitch Jabber server for many years without any problems. Under the "Account" section in Miranda, the only options that are set are Port:5222. There are options for "Use SSL", "Use TLS" and "Use Doman Login" that are unchecked.
[13:30:14] <Carl Hardwick> BTW, right now, Miranda is putting up a pop up message box that says "JB Error connection-timeout" as Miranda tries to login to the Jabber server.
[13:34:31] <Maranda> did you also set the host?
[13:35:24] <Maranda> if yes change it from meaveen.lightwitch.org to im.aria-net.site and check use SSL
[13:40:30] <Carl Hardwick> Maranda Hi Maranda. I had to change machines and restart the chat session. My last chat message was about Miranda showing a connection problem. I might has missed any replies you sent.
[14:05:34] <Maranda> > if yes change it from meaveen.lightwitch.org to im.aria-net.site and check use SSL
> did you also set the host?

^

[14:06:00] <Maranda> to the question: did you also set the host?
[14:16:06] <Carl Hardwick> Maranda The host was always set to lightwitch.org and the SSL option was not enabled.
[14:16:49] <Carl Hardwick> Should I change the host to im.aria-net.site?
[14:19:31] <Carl Hardwick> I see that Miranda has an "Expert" section. There's an option to "Manually specify connection host" and set the Port number. At the moment, those options are blank.
[14:21:05] <Maranda> go in the expert section and flag manually specify the connection host and set:
Host: im.aria-net.site Port: 5223
[14:21:17] <Maranda> flagging also SSL
[14:22:31] <Carl Hardwick> Maranda OK. I'll try that now.
[14:25:15] <Carl Hardwick> Maranda That worked. Miranda was able to login. The other users that I send message to are offline at the moment, so I can't test sending and receiving message yet.
[14:26:19] <Carl Hardwick> BTW, the "Contact Us" web page on Lightwitch.org seems to have a bug. Whenever I enter a message and solve the captcha, the web page always returns a "Verification failed" error message.
[14:26:25] <Carl Hardwick> https://aria-net.org/SitePages/Portal/Contact-Us.aspx
[14:26:35] <Carl Hardwick> That's the contact web page url.
[14:26:38] <Maranda> refresh the captcha
[14:26:48] <Carl Hardwick> I've tried that many times.
[14:28:35] <Maranda> https://aria.im/_matrix/media/v1/download/aria-net.org/FMWipzoQgQdYUHwlJbmxxfHi
[14:28:56] <Maranda> as I said try to refresh it, it's case sensitive also
[14:29:19] <Maranda> (the green button beside the captcha)
[14:31:09] <Carl Hardwick> Yes, I've used that button. I'll try it again. I've been careful about the case of the solution.
[14:32:29] <Carl Hardwick> At the moment, the contact us web page isn't displaying a captcha to solve.
[14:33:04] <Carl Hardwick> I've clicked on the green refresh button several times.
[14:44:04] <Maranda> Don't know what to tell you for me it works, also on Chrome Mobile (using the desktop view)
[14:44:36] <Maranda> so either your system is very outdated, or I dunno
[14:45:32] <Maranda> ah, almost forgot the form doesn't render correctly with Firefox
[14:45:54] <Maranda> (will add that warning)
[14:48:08] <Carl Hardwick> I tried Chrome and on the third attempt, it worked. I sent a test email. Thanks.
[14:51:27] <Carl Hardwick> I tried Chrome several weeks ago and it didn't work. The issue I wanted to report was that the Miranda developers found that the Jabber server was reporting that it supported TLS 1.3 but when Miranda tried to log in using TLS, the login failed. Apparently the Jabber server didn't support TLS. However, with Metronome 4.0 now running, that problem has probably seen fixed.
[14:52:22] <Carl Hardwick> BTW, just out of curiosity, how to I enter a newline while typing in a chat message? Hitting return sends the chat message right away.
[14:53:25] <Maranda> shift + enter
[14:59:16] <Carl Hardwick> Thanks.
I'll come back to the chat if I have any problems with IM with my friends. But it should work now.
[15:02:31] <Carl Hardwick> BTW, you might include something about changing the connection domain name from lightwitch.org to im.aria-net.site
[15:04:25] <Maranda> Any modern client has no issues with that, either the Miranda version you're using is outdated or you should poke the devs to fix SRV records resolution.
[15:11:53] <Carl Hardwick> I disabled expert mode and entered im.aria-net.site into the domain/server name. It was already set for port 5223 and SSL was enabled.
Miranda returned an error message, something about "this server does not serve im.aria-net.site"
That error came back even after I had enabled expert mode again.
It was only after I had changed the server name back to lightwitch.org that Miranda was able to log in.
I'll post a message about SRV records resolution onto the Miranda forum.
Miranda was given lightwitch.org as the server name, should it have been able to discover the proper im.aria-net.site name?
[15:24:45] <Maranda> Carl Hardwick: because the host *IS* lightwitch.org
[15:25:22] *Maranda suggests having a read how the protocol works
[15:25:43] <Maranda> thing remain that you shouldn't touch the connection host ever
[15:26:04] <Maranda> the client SHOULD automatically resolve where it should connect to
[15:26:36] <Maranda> Maybe have a try at some other client e.g. Gajim or Dino
[15:27:52] <Maranda> Because with the scarce remembrances I have of it, Miranda IM is just terrible, at least for XMPP.
[15:34:03] <Carl Hardwick> OK. I'll check into those other clients. In the meantime, I'll post a message about this problem on the Miranda forum.
[15:41:48] <Carl Hardwick> Maranda I'm not sure about the chat protocol. I'll leave the chat now. Thanks for your diagnosis of the problem.
[15:42:09] <Maranda> 👍️
[20:07:17] <Carl Hardwick> Maranda
Hi Maranda. My friend and I tracked down what the problem was with the Miranda and the lightwitch.org jabber server.
Miranda has 3 places where you can set the domain name. One under "Accounts", another under "Jabber" and a third under "Expert mode".
We had set the domain name as Lightwitch.org Port:5222 in "Accounts" in the "Use custom connection" area.
I think that overrode the normal SRV records resolution. When you suggested using im.aria-net.site in the "Expert" section, that overrode the custom connection override.
We disabled the "Custom connection" and the "Expert" settings and everything is working now. I think Miranda must be using Lightwitch.org to obtain the server data and discovering im.aria-net.site domain name properly now.

[20:46:20] <ember> It's the same IP AFAIK, its just DNS usual fuckery
